Sport Auto have tested seven 245/40 R18 Max Performance Summer Tyres on an Audi TT RS, but which will dominate in this dry bias test?

To ensure conditions were suitable for a summer tyre test, Sport Auto visited a Bridgestone test track in Italy. Taking part in the test are some of the newest tyres to market, including the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport, Pirelli P Zero, Bridgestone Potenza S001 and Toyo T1 Sport, along with the existing Nokian Z G2, Dunlop Sport Maxx GT and Sava Intensa.
The Sportiest Tyre
In the dry one tyre shines, the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport. After a single warm up lap the Pilot Super Sport rewards with a razor sharp turn in, the highest level of grip and the fastest lap time, resulting in a highly enjoyable drive. The Pirelli P Zero finishes a close second due to a stronger wet performance, but lacks the ultimate steering precision of the Pilot Super Sport.

The Nokian Z G2 finishes a strong 3rd with an excellent all round performance. While Sport Auto call this tyre an "underdog", this further reenforces Nokians excellent run of form with both summer and winter tyres, confirming the Finish manufacturer is a force to be reckoned with. Closely following the Nokian is the Bridgestone Potenza S001, let down slightly by its wet performance and steering feedback but once again an excellent all round tyre.
The Final Three
The Toyo Proxes T1 Sport nudges out the dry weather specialist Dunlop Sport Maxx GT to 5th, thanks to a strong wet performance while the Sava finishes in a last place as a result of the worst wet and dry handling and the longest braking distances.
1st: Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Total: 233 / Dry: 124 / Wet: 64 / Subjective: 45
Overall: The Michelin Pilot Super Sport left the most sporty impression, characterised by extremely precise steering and agile handling. Over 10 dry handling laps the Pilot Super Sport shows no degradation of lap time unlike the competitors. On a wet track the quick load change required an experience driver.

2nd: Pirelli P Zero
Total: 231 / Dry: 120 / Wet: 71 / Subjective: 40
Overall: The Pirelli P Zero is an excellent all round tyre with very balanced scoring and handling.

3rd: Nokian Z G2
Total: 226 / Dry: 109 / Wet: 79 / Subjective: 38
Overall: The Nokian Z G2 shines in the wet with the best braking, the second fastest lap time and beautifully balanced handling. Slight understeer in the dry.

4th: Bridgestone Potenza S001
Total: 218 / Dry: 113 / Wet: 66 / Subjective: 39
Overall: The S001 is a good all round tyre without shining in any particular area.

5th: Toyo Proxes T1 Sport
Total: 215 / Dry: 104 / Wet: 73 / Subjective: 38
Overall: The Toyo T1 Sport is a wet weather specalist, placing second in the wet tests. Unfortunately in the dry the steering provides little feedback and understeer inhibits agility. The tyre seems to overheat on quick laps.

6th: Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT
Total: 209 / Dry: 117 / Wet: 52 / Subjective: 40
Overall: The Sport Maxx GT was developed with the Audi TT and offers excellent dry performance and a quick precise steering. When wet, the Dunlop suffers with a relative lack of grip leading to 6th place.

7th: Sava intensa uhp
Total: 188 / Dry: 94 / Wet: 62 / Subjective: 32
Misc: While the Sava is the cheapest tyre in the test, it cannot keep up with the premium competition. The Sava has very good aquaplaning properties, but a lack of grip in the wet and dry leading to heavy understeer. Worst tyre for braking.

2012 Auto Bild Max Performance Tyre Test
Traditionally, German based Auto Bild put together some of the best tyre tests in the world, and in 2012 they've set a new benchmark.

Not content with picking 15 of the top tyres to test, Auto Bild started with 50 of the leading tyres in 225/45 R17, and subjected them to wet and dry braking, only putting through the top 15 to this test to ensure the tyres on test really are the best of the best.

Subjecting just the top 15 tyres from the braking tests to the usual array of handling tests have left the results closer than ever, but with some surprise tyres included. Of course, with only 15 of 50 going through there's some surprise ommisions, with the Falken FK453, Yokohama Advan Sport, Vredestein Ultra Cento and Avon ZV5 not even making it to the top 25 of the knockout test.

The Top 6
Leading test is a TyreReviews favourite, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. Commended for its excellent wet handling, and having one of the shortest braking distance in the dry, the Goodyear was classed as a "tyre without fault".

While the winner might not have been a surprise, a very strong showing from Nokian with the Z G2 left the "premium midrange" tyre in a very close second place. Nokian is one of the highest rated winter tyre brands in the world, and this test proves they know how to make a summer tyre too. Commended for dynamic handling, low fuel consumption and short braking, the Z G2 is a tyre to watch (and use!) in the future.

Third place was awarded to the new Hankook S1 EVO 2. The new EVO was rated the best on the wet handling course, and strong 3rd place in the dry handling left its only real weakness being the second highest wear of the group.

Also being marked down for wear was the 4th place Dunlop Sport Maxx RT. Just released, the Sport Maxx RT scored joint first in the dry handling and wet braking tests and was only a fraction behind the Hankook in the wet handling tests.

Fifth place was taken by the Bridgestone S001. The Bridgestone scored very well in the wear and mileage tests, and resisted aquaplaning better than most, however struggled in the wet handling tests with understeer, something we found in our 2011 subjective shootout.

Rounding out the top 6 is the Continental Sport Contact 5. This result will disappoint Continental, as the Sport Contact 3 was nearly exclusively a test winner, but the Sport Contact 5 lost points for being the most expensive tyre on test, and very noisy. On the positive side, it had the lowest fuel consumption and the best braking on wet roads, so this tyre will do extremely well when the tyre labelling law is introduced, which focuses on these two areas.

The Rest
7th to 10th was taken by the Pirelli P7 Cinturato, Michelin Primacy 3, Barum Bravuris 2 and Fulda Sport Control. The Michelin Primacy 3 scored extremely well considering it's designed to be a touring tyre, but we can't help but feel the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 would have faired better, and Barum and Fulda proved once again they're the mid range brands to consider, instead of Falken, Vredestein, Kumho etc who didn’t make it into the top 14. The Fulda was also award the "eco master" badge, offering the best price / performance in the top 15.

11th place was taken by the Nexen N8000. Curiously Nexen don't usually score this well, but with the Korean brand recently bringing a fully automated factory online, could Nexen be the first budget brand to emerge as a real contender to the mid range brands? They’ll have to work on wear if they truly want an all round balanced tyre, with the N8000 predicted to have less than half the life of the best tyres on test.

The Toyo T1 Sport ended in 12th place, with the Uniroyal Rainsport 2 in 13th. Interestingly the Uniroyal scored near, or at the top of every wet test, but was let down by its poor handling in the dry, where as the Toyo was stronger in the dry, but suffered an average wet performance and a high rolling resistance.

14th and 15th went to the BF Goodridge gForce Profiler and the Kumho KU39. The BF Goodridge seemed to trade the best wear score for poor wet handling, where as the Kumho was a comfortable tyre but comparatively poor in every other category.

The Results
As always with Auto Bild tests, the scores are weighed in favour of the wet performances, so the automatically totalling can be ignored.
1st: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
Total: 31 / Dry: 8 / Wet: 8 / Rolling Resistance: 8 / Wear: 7
Positive: Extremely well balanced tyre without fault. Dynamic wet handling, shortest braking distances on wet and dry roads, low rolling resistance.

2nd: Nokian Z G2
Total: 32 / Dry: 8 / Wet: 8 / Rolling Resistance: 8 / Wear: 8
Positive: Convincing all rounder with the shortest braking distances on wet and dry roads. Good steering precision, low fuel consumption.

3rd: Hankook Ventus S1 evo2
Total: 29 / Dry: 9 / Wet: 9 / Rolling Resistance: 7 / Wear: 4
Positive: Top performance on wet and dry roads, good resistance to aquaplaning, short braking distances.
Negative: High wear.

4th: Dunlop SportMaxx RT
Total: 27 / Dry: 8 / Wet: 9 / Rolling Resistance: 7 / Wear: 3
Positive: Dynamic sporty handing on the wet and dry track with the top dry handling, stable cornering, short braking distances.
Negative: High wear.

5th: Bridgestone Potenza S001

Positive: Safe handling and short braking distances on dry roads, very good mileage.
Negative: Understeer in the wet, increased fuel consumption.

2011 Auto Zeitung Max Performance Tyre Test
Auto Zeitung always put on a good tyre test, and this year they’ve tested 14 different 225/45 r17 tyres on an Audi A3, including new tyres from Goodyear, Pirelli, Sava, Nexen and Firestone.

The results are closer than ever, with both the dry and wet performance scores hotly contested. Overall, the new Pirelli P Zero wins thanks to it’s incredibly high wet grip and strong scores in every category. The new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 places second thanks to it's class leading braking and low rolling resistance, while the Goodyears sister tyre, Dunlop Sport Maxx TT rounded out the top 3 due to it’s sporty handling and excellent grip throughout.

As always with Auto Zeitung, the scores are bias towards wet performance, and subjective feel of the tyres isn't judged.

Dry: On dry asphalt the Pirelli is outstanding, with excellent handing and great stablility

2nd: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Wet: The revised Goodyear is an extremely stable tyre with netural balance and clear feedback

Dry: In the dry the Dunlop is strong on the brakes and offers excellent feedback. Only let down by a relatively high rolling resistance
Wet: Fantastic wet handling with good feedback, exact steering and exemplary balance
Overall: The agile Sport Maxx TT speaks to the sporty driver

4th: Hankook Ventus S1 evo
Total: 241 / Dry: 93 / Wet: 126 / Rolling Resistance: 15 / Comfort: 7
Dry: Strong grip and a good neutral balance, let down by a slight lack of feedback
Wet: Excellent wet grip and handling
Overall: The S1 EVO's strong wet performance places it a respectable 4th

5th: Michelin Pilot Sport 3 PS3

Dry: Excellent dry handling let down by a slightly high rolling resistance
Wet: Secure in the wet with slight understeer at the limit

Dry: Very stable in the dry, offering fantastic braking and a fast lap time
Wet: Very fast wet lap, but demanded a lot of driver skill
Overall: Even with the new Sport Contact 5P available, the 3 still performs extremely well

7th: Bridgestone Potenza S001

Dry: The fastest tyre in the dry
Wet: The wet tests indicated Bridgestone has chosen to concentrate more on the dry performance of the tyre

8th: Nokian Z G2

Dry: Good natured dry performance with no real weakness
Wet: The Nokian forgives driving errors with a neutral balance in the wet
Overall: The combination of the A3 and Z G2 is a good combination and shows the Nokian to have no significant weakness

9th: Fulda SportControl
Total: 225 / Dry: 85 / Wet: 115 / Rolling Resistance: 18 / Comfort: 7
Dry: Excellent rolling resistance and low noise. Under hard dry cornering the Fulda looses a little accuracy
Wet: High steering precision and good wet grip
Overall: The Fulda SportControl is the best of the cheaper tyres

10th: Sava intensa uhp
Total: 218 / Dry: 85 / Wet: 110 / Rolling Resistance: 17 / Comfort: 6
Dry: Again the Intensa UHP has a little oversteer, but quick dry lap times
Wet: The Sava performs a lot like the Fulda in the wet, however offers a little more oversteer
Overall: The new Sava is an alternative for bargain hunters

11th: Vredestein Ultrac Cento
Total: 210 / Dry: 87 / Wet: 102 / Rolling Resistance: 13 / Comfort: 8
Dry: A comfortable tyre in the dry, the Ultrac Cento reaches it's limit of grip earlier than other tyres
Wet: Excellent aquaplaning results but let down by it's long wet braking performance
Overall: Good comfort but long wet braking leave the Vredestein 11th

12th: BFGoodrich g Force Profiler
Total: 203 / Dry: 84 / Wet: 97 / Rolling Resistance: 15 / Comfort: 7
Dry: Reasonable grip but poor turn in
Wet: Easy wet handling but sensitive on curved aquaplaning
Overall: Despite the V profile, the BF Goodrich has problems with aquaplaning and only average dry qualities

13th: Nexen N8000
Total: 201 / Dry: 84 / Wet: 106 / Rolling Resistance: 5 / Comfort: 6
Dry: Poor dry braking and high rolling resistance
Wet: The N8000 scores extremely well in the aquaplaning tests, but has only average wet lap time
Overall: Aquaplaning is the largest strength of the Nexen, longest dry braking and highest rolling resistance costs it valuable points

14th: Firestone Firehawk SZ90
Total: 174 / Dry: 78 / Wet: 80 / Rolling Resistance: 10 / Comfort: 6
Dry: Slowest dry lap and slowest in the slalom
Wet: Average aquaplaning and join slowest wet lap time
Overall: While the Firestones unusual profile makes the tyre look quick, it's unconvincing in both the wet and dry
